Heat Incentive (RHI)
Up until very recently, it seemed that those with solar thermal systems would have to look on with envy at those with solar PV systems and feed in tariffs. This is now changing and from April 2011 the government will be rewarding those with solar thermal systems in a similar way to solar PV feed in tariffs..
Not all the details are available at this moment in time, but we do know the following facts:
- The amount of money paid to those on the solar thermal feed in tariff will be calculated via the amount of heat generated in kilowatt hours.
- The renewable heat incentive will use an estimate rather than measure actual kilowatts created.
- This incentive will then be paid annually for a guaranteed twenty years.
- There will be two rates of payment depending on your system. Systems creating up to 20 kilowatts will be paid £0.18 per kilowatt, while systems generating between 20 and 100 will be paid £0.17 per kilowatt.
- Thermal systems fitted by MCS accredited companies after 15/07/09 will generally be eligible for the feed in tariff.

Let’s talk figures. While there are obviously a number of factors that will affect the end payment from the solar thermal feed in tariff, most households could potentially earn between £160 and £350 per year.
When you consider that this is on top of the savings made from producing the majority of a home’s hot water needs, it’s easy to see why the feed in tariff cannot come soon enough.
