What is an air source heat pump and how does it work?

The short answer is that it basically does what it says on the tin. In other words, it’s a pump that takes the heat in the air around us and uses it in variety of ways including central heating, under floor heating and hot water.

Now, you would perhaps argue that considering we live in the UK, there’s very rarely any heat in the air to extract and use for a home; surprisingly you’d be wrong on this count. Amazingly, air source heat pumps can extract heat from the air even when it’s minus 15 outside!

So, what’s the catch and why aren’t we all using them?  Well, aside from still needing electricity to run, there’s no particularly good reason why they aren’t currently more popular and they undoubtedly will be in the future.
