What is Solar Energy?
Solar energy is something we take for granted like nuclear power, and like nuclear power the majority of us haven’t got a clue how it works, other than the fact that it does.
So, what’s the easiest way to explain solar energy? Well, firstly it’s important to note that solar energy is the source of the vast majority of energy used on Earth. And it’snot
just a case of using solar panels and this energy being subsequently converted into electricity.
To cut a long and somewhat complicated story short, starting off from within the sun, energy is created via a process of nuclear fusion. During this process energy is emitted into space which subsequently makes its way to earth. As you can imagine, this is a rather large amount of energy despite it only being a tiny fraction of that which is emitted.
What happens to this energy when it reaches Earth? The short answer is a few things including:
- It enables the evaporation of water into the atmosphere.
- It’s used by plants and the land to aid in growth and creation of oxygen.
- While a large chunk is reflected back into space a tiny fraction is used to supply our energy needs.
Ultimately, solar energy is an environmentally friendly and renewable energy source. It also has the potential to be free and assist with the world’s energy rapidly increasing energy requirements.
So, if the potential savings aren’t reason enough to move to solar energy, the fact that you’ll contribute to the world which our future generations will inhabit should help to persuade you.
